Case study

Cutting a 76,000-product export down in seconds.

A VBA script, built with ChatGPT's help, that turns a sitewide catalog export into exactly the rows I need, in seconds instead of by hand.

Illustration. Simplified, with no real company data.

The problem

A sitewide export includes every product ever created, roughly 76,000 rows, when most tasks only involve a slice of the 26,000 active ones. Filtering by hand is slow, and one missed condition means bad data goes back into the store.

What I did

I knew exactly what the output needed to look like, so I used ChatGPT to help me write a VBA script that applies those rules every time: it removes the products I don’t need and organizes what’s left, ready for lookups and import templates. I’m not a VBA developer, and I didn’t need to be. I used the tools I had to get the result I needed.

The result

  • Minutes of manual filtering became seconds.
  • The same rules run every time, so the output is consistent.
  • Even with newer tools available, I still check work against it. I’d rather take a little more time and get it right the first time.
